New OPs Kit And Leisurewear For September - Your Views Please

For some time we have been wanting to introduce an OPs playing kit to be used for the OPs vs College Sports Day and other fixtures, plus a range of OPs leisurewear.

Neil McCollin, Director of Sport has been working on the project with OPs Felix Heath and Harvey Broadbent, both regulars on the OPs Rugby Team, to develop a range of options with the intention of rolling the chosen designs out for September.

Felix is an Account Manager with sportwear brand Akuma and Harvey is the Founder of sustainable clothing brand, Positive Outlook.

Comments, Neil McCollin, "For the OPs kit we have opted for the College's corporate blue and white, so we can differentiate from the red and black of the College teams. For leisurewear, for starters we are looking at a retro rugby shirt, sticking to the more traditional, red, black and white, which we hope will prove popular. Over time more leisurewear options will be introduced."

Initially the playing kit will be available for the Rugby and Boys and Girls Hockey, Football and Netball kit will be available in due course.

There are four options of the playing kit and four options of the retro rugby shirt for you to consider, click on this link to view.  Both Men's and ladies' fit will be available.

Please feedback to Neil at neilmccollin@princethorpe.co.uk by the end of March if you have any preferred designs and let us know if you would be interested in purchasing the retro rugby shirt which will retail for around £50.  Neil would also like to know if you are interested in playing at the OPs vs College Sports Day on Saturday 5 September.

Oxbridge Offers For High-Flying Old Princethorpians

Three Old Princethorpians are thrilled to have received unconditional offers for places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Former Head Girl, Lizzie Carr, 19, will be reading English Language and Literature at Christ Church College, Oxford, she will be joined by Amy Field, 18, who has an Open Offer to read History at Oxford University too, and Daisy Vucevic, 19, will read Theology, Religion and Philosophy of Religion at Selwyn College, Cambridge.

The high-flying girls all received outstanding A-level results last summer and on the back of that success made the decision to apply to the UK’s two most prestigious universities.

Oxbridge places are highly oversubscribed and increasingly competitive, the talented trio faced a tough selection process consisting of pre-tests, intensive scrutiny of their academic and personal achievements and rigorous interviews before receiving the good news. Throughout the process they were supported and encouraged by the Sixth Form team, Oxbridge Co-ordinator, Mrs Hester and their Princethorpe subject teachers, who provided individual guidance over the past few months.

Princethorpe College Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie, commented, “These three girls have earned this outstanding success. During their time at Princethorpe College they applied themselves not only to their academic studies, but also to developing themselves as confident and mature young people. Applying to Oxbridge is an extremely rigorous and character-testing experience that seems to get tougher every year.  We were delighted to support them with their applications and are exceptionally proud of all their achievements.”

College Clock Restoration Keeps Ticking Along

Former Head of Chemistry, John Miller, visited the College on Tuesday 10 December with Estates Assistant, Gerry Lovely, to see how the restoration of the clock-tower was coming along.

The clock is a landmark at Princethorpe and has played an important role in the daily lives of all who have lived and worked here.  The current clock was purchased in 1861, it was last renovated in 1959 for the then Reverend Mother, Mary Augustine’s Golden Jubilee.

John and Gerry kept the clocks working here at Princethorpe College for over 40 years.

John explained, “I first started at Princethorpe back in the 1970s. The clock needed regular winding so I was always climbing about the roof space.  Often, I would pop out of a door and surprise the boys, they wouldn’t know where I had come from.”

John and Gerry were both fascinated by the restoration process that includes both the stonework of the clock tower and the clock mechanisms.  Head of Estates, Michael Small, showed them the progress so far. New stonework has been arriving regularly and is carefully being installed.  A new auto winding mechanism has been fitted to the clock and the new clock faces have been freshly painted and are now back on site waiting to be re-fitted once the stonework is complete. John and Gerry gamely braved the weather and went up the scaffolding to look at the stonework restoration and they also went up the clock tower from the inside to look at the new auto winding mechanism. They both enjoyed seeing the improvements the work has made.

Cumbria Clocks, the clock restoration company have been amazed by the condition of the College clock.  They commented on John and Gerry’s workmanship and ingenuity, that had included using items such as a chair caster, to keep the clock working for all these years.

The stone work is nearly completed and then the clock faces will be refitted, the scaffolding will come down and the clock will once again be a focal point for the whole community to all enjoy.

OP Friendly Faces Gears Up To Help The Next Generation Of OPs

We are looking to get more OP Friendly Faces on board to widen the support network of OPs in universities across the country for the leavers of 2020.

OP Friendly Faces aims to link past pupils established at university with first year OP students. Providing a friendly, familiar face to meet up with over a coffee (compliments of the OPs) or having someone to call in their new uni town or city, does, we know, make for a smoother experience in those first few weeks away from home.

Many of our current Upper Sixth are receiving offers and will shortly be choosing their first and second choice destinations, so it would be good to know soon who is willing to give them on the ground advice and tips. We are hoping that many of those who were helped last year will be prepared to be a Friendly Face this year, and that many of those already signed up to help will also be prepared to continue.

Grace Blackhall, who is at UEA studying Physiotherapy benefited from the initiative, she comments, "It was really helpful to have an OP friendly face and I am happy to be there for whomever choses my university."

Comments OPs Secretary, Melanie Butler, " We have OP Friendly Faces in around 35 university towns and cities and would like to expand on that significantly this year and get more of our leavers matched up for the new academic year."

If you are interested in becoming an OP Friendly Faces for this year's Upper Sixth leavers please email oldprincethorpians@princethorpe.co.uk.

OPs To Play A Central Role In College Careers Fair 2020

The College's Careers Fair 2020 will provide a ‘one stop careers shop’ thanks in large part to the support of the Old Princethorpian network.

The event which is scheduled for the morning of Saturday 21 March is looking to be even bigger and better than before.  Current parent, Dr Charlotte Cowie, Head of Medicine at the Football Association, has kindly agreed to be the keynote speaker and a host of careers and professions will be represented.

Comments Head of Careers, Jacqui Quinney, "We have had a great response from Old Princethorpians, who alongside our parents are forming the backbone to the Fair. We have some speakers from previous events who have kindly agreed to speak again and a number of new speakers helping us for the first time.”

Thanks to the many OPs involved including Liam Jarrett, Dan Lane, Autumn Wells, Nigel Bromley, Nico McKenzie, Emily Wilson, Lucy Butler, Steve Evans and Tom Cross.

There will also be over a dozen universities exhibiting plus a number of gap year companies all who will be providing ideas and advice.

OP Murray Wells Inspires Engineers With Tales Of The Bloodhound Supersonic Car

Princethorpe College was delighted to welcome back Old Princethorpian Murray Wells on Thursday 9 January to talk to Lower Sixth students and Design Technology pupils about the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic Car) Project and plans for it to set a new world Land Speed Record.

Murray left Princethorpe in 2014 and went on to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire.  He had always wanted to be an engineer, his choice of career reinforced by a video he saw explaining just how the Bloodhound was powered.  So he jumped at the chance to work on a placement with the project, amongst the UK’s best engineers, on what can only be described as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Murray explained that the Bloodhound SSC project has two objectives. To set a new Land Speed Record at or above 1,000mph, but also to address the shortage of engineers, by inspiring a whole new generation of enthusiasts.  He recounted the history of the Land Speed Record and of British involvement in it and how ex-RAF pilot Andy Green finally set the current record of 763 miles per hour in Thrust SSC in 1997.

He talked about the Bloodhound SSC Project and the design challenges it faces. How it took two years to design a new body shape, the search for the right engine, the challenges of developing fuel pumps, air brakes and even wheels. He explained that the car will weigh six tonnes, be three metres tall and larger than a bus and that the plan is to drive at 1,000 miles per hour over 12 miles of desert.  He explained about the work done to prepare the race site in Hakskeen Pan in the Mier area of the Northern Cape, South Africa and the positive impact the project has had on the local community.

Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Rod Isaacs and Head of Design and Technology, Paul Scopes both agreed that Murray’s talk was fascinating, saying, “The Bloodhound SSC is one of the most exciting engineering projects in the world, there really is nothing like UK engineering, it was incredible to hear about the project and its achievements so far.”

Our huge thanks go to Murray for taking the time to come into school to talk about the project and his involvement with it.

Former Headmaster Returns To Princethorpe

Princethorpe College was delighted to welcome former Headmaster, John Shinkwin, back into school on Friday 22 November.  John was attending the annual Prize Giving celebrations at the Warwick Arts Centre in the evening but found time in the afternoon to return to the College and enjoy a tour of the school.

John also met with the Foundation Development Team to hear about their fundraising for the Bursary Fund and for the College's Science Campaign.

OP Brunch Enjoyed By All The Generations

It was great to welcome Old Princethorpians and former parents back to the College on Saturday 12 October for another one of our popular Brunches.

There was a lovely atmosphere as old friends caught up with each other and new friendships were forged. It was particularly lovely to have two groups with no less than three generations of the family in attendance and to see how well behaved the youngest guests all were.

Everyone is always most welcome at our OP events as we really enjoy staying in touch with our Princethorpe community.

Momentum Building For College’s Science Campaign

Plans for the College’s new Science Centre are entering the next exciting stage of development, having concluded the RIBA ‘developed design’ stage on schedule at the end of January.

During February and March, the College’s Science Working Group and professional advisors will be working on a revised cost plan and undertaking a period of value engineering to see where savings can be made on the project, before entering the ‘technical design’ stage.

The team now have at their disposal a virtual 3D model enabling them to effectively walk around the building from a computer keyboard, in order to refine their plans. They are fine-tuning elements including visual displays, laboratory layouts and details such as arrangements for services in the state-of-the-art £8 million building.

Comments, Ed Hester, Headmaster, “We are moving forward apace with the project. There is still a huge amount of work to do but if all goes to plan we should be in a position to go to tender at the end of August, with construction starting early in 2021 and completion in summer 2022. To bring the project to life for pupils, parents and staff a scale model of the building has been commissioned and will be put on display in school shortly after half term.”

The fundraising campaign launched to work hand in hand with the delivery of the project has been well received by stakeholders. Early responses to the Development Team’s mailing of the new Science Campaign Plus brochure and attendance at school events such as Parents’ Evenings has seen good levels of interest expressed in both sponsored periodic table elements and engraved granite floor pavers.

17 of the 118 elements on the giant Periodic Table that will be displayed in the new building have already been provisionally reserved. The Headmaster has also reserved five extra-special elements which will be auctioned off towards the end of the campaign, at a special event to be announced. The extra-special elements encompass some of the most precious materials on Earth and we hope these five will raise a significant amount of money towards the new Science Centre (see image).

The next phase of the fundraising will include a two-week summer Phonathon campaign involving young Old Princethorpians, who will be contacting the wider Princethorpe community to raise the profile of the campaign and secure further donations.

Our Director of Development, comments, “Fundraising is vital in making our vision for Science Plus a reality and bringing it to fruition as soon as possible. We would welcome the opportunity to talk to parents, staff and pupils about the Campaign and the broader work of the Development Office.”

For more information on the Science Plus Campaign and to register your interest in the Menu of Giving, which also features regular giving and corporate and personal naming opportunities click here.

Princethorpe To Embark On First Ever Phonathon

Princethorpe is to embark on its first ever phonathon – and we need you!

This summer Princethorpe’s Development Office, in association with fundraising experts Buffalo, will be undertaking the College’s first ever phonathon, which will run from 17-31 August.

Phonathons, a mainstay fundraising activity for schools and universities around the world, give educational institutions the opportunity to speak to and reconnect with members of their community and ask them to support their fundraising objectives. Our phonathon will be concentrating on raising funds and awareness for our new Science Centre, due to open in 2022.

We will shortly be recruiting a team of professional callers to undertake this vital work – and we need people who are real Princethorpe enthusiasts and know the school extremely well who can act as great ambassadors when undertaking calling.

We think this work may suit recent leavers who may be back from university for the summer holidays. The work takes place on weekday evenings and weekends only, leaving a good amount of free time during the day. The pay rates will be competitive and will include full training, which is also paid. The roles will be based onsite at Princethorpe for the duration of the campaign.

If you’re a great communicator and passionate about Princethorpe we’d like to hear from you. If you would be interested in applying please let us know and we can send you more information, when available. Please email Development Director, on makingadifference@princethorpe.co.uk.

Rachael Mack Selected For Scottish Hockey Squad In European Championships

A Princethorpe College teacher claimed international honours after being selected for the Scottish Hockey Senior Women’s Indoor Squad.

Rachael Mack represented Scotland at the European Indoor Hockey Championships in Zagreb, Croatia where she faced elite players from countries including Wales, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Lithuania and Croatia.

Rachael, who plays for Leicester Hockey Club, came through a series of rigorous selection camps to seal her place in the squad and was delighted to have been selected for the Senior Women’s Indoor Squad.

She has worked at Princethorpe College since 2014, where she teaches English and Games and coaches the Girls 1st XI and the U15 Boys Hockey teams.

Rachael said, “It has been a dream for as long as I can remember to play for my country and I feel incredibly proud to have been selected to play in the European Championships.  I’m very grateful to everyone who helped me get here and to my colleagues for their support whilst I was away.”

Three Peaks Challenge Supports Malawi 2020

It was a huge well done to Princethorpe's triumphant team of Rod Isaacs, Ben Collie, Cyp Vella, Will Bower and DofE instructor Paul Coombes, who completed the 25 mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in a mere 8 hours 20 minutes back in October. (The Challenge has to be completed in under 12 hours!)

The team took on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough and 5,200ft of ascent, on a gloriously clear but cold day, running a lot of the way. They had the invaluable support of the one and only Will Uglow (former Princethorpe staff member) who made the whole experience so much easier by replenishing their supplies and water along the way.

The group were raising funds for the Classrooms for Malawi building and refurbishment project at Lauderdale school, that will take place in July 2020 when a group from Princethorpe will venture to Malawi for our first expedition to the country.

You can find out more about the project and show your support by visiting their fundraising page.

Glow For Myton - Around The World In 5km Fundraiser To Take Place At Princethorpe

Saturday 28 March 2020 - Arrive from 6.30pm - Walk from 9.00pm

Princethorpe is delighted to be hosting a major fundraising event for the charity Myton Hospice on Saturday 28 March 2020.

Glow For Myton - Around The World In 5km is a night walk that will wind its way through the beautiful grounds of the College campus, taking in the sights and sounds of some of the world’s best celebrations along the way. Myton Hospice has been running sponsored night walks for a number of years in city centre locations. The events have proved so popular that the charity started looking for a new venue and Princethorpe College was delighted to step in. Ideally situated midway between the charity’s three hospices in Coventry, Warwick and Rugby, Myton Hospice is hoping to attract hundreds of walkers from across Warwickshire for what it is describing as its biggest and best Glow fundraiser ever.

The 5km walk will begin and end in the Orchard where there will be entertainment and food available both before and after the event. The route will take walkers off around the College grounds. There will be plenty of volunteer marshals to cheer all the walkers on and along the way will be exciting zones showcasing festivals and cultural celebrations from around the world including Oktoberfest, Chinese New Year and the Holi Colour Festival. The event isn’t timed, instead it is all about enjoying the experience and the sights and sounds laid on for the event.

Comments Clare Cropp, Myton’s Community and Events Fundraising Manager, “We are hoping to raise £60,000 from this event and are really looking forward to holding it at Princethorpe. The event is already generating a lot of interest and we’re very grateful to the College for so generously supporting us.”

Glow For Myton - Around The World In 5km is open to all, and pupils and parents are encouraged to sign up for the event, to register costs £20 for adults and £15 for children on the charity’s website here. (Children of all ages are welcome but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.)

The event is sure to be great fun for a good cause so we are hoping lots of families and friends of the Foundation will want to get involved.

Unprecedented Interest In Teaching At Princethorpe

Princethorpe’s first Taste of Teaching event took place on Thursday 23 January.  Unprecedented interest saw the College welcoming 70 prospective applicants into the school, a reflection of the strength of the College’s reputation.

The visitors had the chance to take a tour of the College campus and facilities with Sixth Formers, meet with the Heads of Department and listen to a presentation from the Headmaster, Ed Hester.  There was also the chance to ask questions and to engage with existing staff and to get a feel for what makes Princethorpe such a special place to work.

Feedback from the event was incredibly positive and we received plenty of applications for the opportunities on offer.

We will be holding our next Taste of Teaching event on Wednesday 4 March.  We are always partucularly pleased to welcome Old Princethorpians back to the fold so if you would be interested then you can find out more about current vacancies and future events on the school website here.

2018/19 Tower Review Just Published

The latest edition of the College’s magazine, The Tower Review, was published just before Christmas.

It tells the story of the last school year, term by term, reflecting on the whole host of activities, achievements and successes that pupils from Year 7 through to Upper Sixth took part in.  It includes highlights such as Prize Giving and the College production as well as reviews of sporting events, House competitions and school trips.

2018/19 was an incredible year with many wonderful and memorable moments and we hope this annual souvenir review will be treasured by pupils and parents alike.

The magazine was mailed to the Leavers of 2019 and you can view a copy, on the school website here.

If you would like to receive a printed copy please email marketing@princethorpe.co.uk with your name and address.

College Prize Giving Celebrates Pupils’ Exceptional Achievements

Another exceptional year of achievement, progress, creativity and contribution was celebrated at Princethorpe College’s prestigious annual Prize Giving Ceremony at the Butterworth Hall, Warwick University Arts Centre on Friday 22 November.

Before the ceremony the Old Princethorpians Committee hosted a special Drinks Reception for the returning Upper Sixth and their parents, providing a welcome opportunity for last year’s cohort to get together and catch up on their news since the summer.

Trustee, Bernard Warner, opened the proceedings, warmly welcoming parents, friends of the College and Princethorpians old and new to the occasion.

In his formal address the Headmaster, Ed Hester, gave thanks to all those who make Princethorpe the special place it is. His warm words paid tribute to all that is done in support of the College, the kindness, the compassion and the values that underpin the success stories of so many of our pupils and not just those who received prizes on the evening.

The atmosphere all evening was joyful and celebratory and there were superb musical interludes from the school Orchestra, Jazz Band and the Year 7 Chorus, who impressively sang Bohemian Rhapsody. It was a fitting tribute to the Leavers of 2019 who were the first Year 7 group to sing at Prize Giving and who had sung the very same song seven years before.

And then it was time for the presentation of the GCSE and A-level Examination Certificates and a myriad of trophies, cups and shields. Watching the stream of young people coming across the stage and shaking Mr Hester’s hand was truly inspiring and humbling. The talent in evidence, the grit and determination, the passion, enthusiasm and commitment were all applauded and honoured.

Some of the young people took to the stage with confidence, others more self-consciously, some made us laugh, some brought a tear to our eye as we listened to, Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie’s citations.

And finally, it was time for the main award, the Princethorpe Shield, the oldest and most prestigious College award presented annually to the student who is seen to embody the spirit and ethos of the College in many facets of their school life.  It was a very popular decision, that brought the audience to their feet, cheering a delighted and surprised Meera Chauhan who was welcomed to the stage to receive the Shield.

Then to close the proceedings Head Girl, Leah Dunkley, and Head Boy, Jack Bent, gave an eloquent vote of thanks before the evening finally came to an inspiring end with enthusiastic singing of the College Hymn, Here I Am Lord by the assembled throng.

The full list of Prize Winners can be found in the Prize Giving Programme here.

College Artists Recognised In Prestigious ISA Art Competition

Recent Upper Sixth leaver, Helena Lintott been awarded first place in the Independent Schools’ Association’s prestigious National Art Competition.

Helena’s stunning painting The Gift took first place in the coveted Over 16 Painting category. The Gift refers to the Three Graces who in Greek mythology are the personifications of beauty, charm, and grace; they were the daughters of Zeus and given these ‘gifts’ by him to bestow on the world.  The piece will be instantly recognisable to anyone connected to the College as it has featured on the cover of the school’s Pinnacle magazine.

We are also pleased to tell you that Year 12, Sophie Cheshire’s GCSE design project, that won the Midlands Regional Key Stage 4 Textiles class received a Highly Commended in the National competition.  Her winning design project used textures, sounds and colours to create a holistic aesthetic experience to help slow the development of Alzheimer’s.  Her work took an innovative approach and you can understand why it caught the judges’ eyes. Sophie also took a second award in the Regional competition receiving a Highly Commended in the Key Stage 4 3D category.

Helena and Sophie were not the only College prize-winners in this year’s Art competitions as a number of other pupils also saw success in the ISA Regional Midlands Art competition. Recent leaver Fleur Street won the Over 16 Photography, and further awards were given to Lower Sixth Formers, Damien Cowie who placed second in the Key Stage 4 Drawing category and Abbie O’Carroll Bailey who came second in the Key Stage 4 Sketchbook class.

Princethorpe College Head of Art, Paul Hubball, was delighted commenting, “These prizes reflect the talent we have within our school. There were plenty of excellent entries for the competition so we are very pleased to have so many winners.”

Crescent School Offers Additional Reception Class In Response To Demand

For the first time in the school's history and in response to high demand for Reception school places in the local area, the Foundation's junior school, Crescent School situated in Bilton, Rugby, is adding a second Reception class for September 2020.

Applications for places in Reception in 2020 started early and the school was quickly oversubscribed. The school normally limits places in the Reception class to just 20 children each year but with applications already well over that number, and with two Year 6 classes leaving this July, the school has the capacity to offer a second Reception class. Parents who are considering the school are encouraged to register their interest as soon as possible to ensure they secure a place in next year’s cohort.

Comments, Headmaster, Joe Thackway, “We are seeing an enormous amount of new house building in Bilton and the surrounding area and hope that this extra provision will be well received.

“Having two classes of up to 20 pupils each will enable more pupils to benefit from our experienced Early Years team and specialist child-centred tailored approach."

Prospective parents who would be interested in a Reception place for their child in September 2020 are urged to contact Mrs Helen Morley, the Registrar, on 01788 523851 or email admissions@crescentschool.co.uk to register their interest and are invited to attend the school’s Open Morning on Saturday 21 March from 9.30am to 12.00 noon.

Part of the Princethorpe Foundation, the Crescent is a co-educational independent day school for around 160 children aged 4 to 11 years. Traditionally one form entry, class sizes range from up to 20 pupils for Reception to Year 2 to up to 24 for Years 3 to 6.
